Suitable for most fitness levels; riders should be able to stand unaided and climb a few flights of stairs.
Glide from Devonport’s ferry terminal to the summit of North Head on a guided Segway tour that pairs coastal panoramas with 19th-century fort history. Small groups and helmeted instruction make this an accessible introduction to Auckland’s volcanic coastline.
You push off from the ferry terminal and the village hums behind you — a short glide past Victorian storefronts before the coastline opens and the land runs up into the volcanic cone of North Head. On two wheels the coast comes at you differently: the wind talks in your ears, the Hauraki Gulf stretches like a restless silver mirror, and a guide points out gun emplacements carved into the slope in the 1880s.

Morning departures have softer light and fewer visitors on the summit paths, which makes for clearer photos and a quieter ride.
You’ll practice on the Segway and also climb stairs in the fort; sturdy footwear keeps you safe and comfortable.
Sea breezes off the Hauraki Gulf can be sharp even on warm days — a light shell cuts the chill without weighing you down.
Participants must weigh between 35–120 kg and be at least 13 for the North Head tour — check requirements before booking.
North Head (Maungauika) served as a coastal defense site from the 1880s through World War II; its fortifications and tunnels remain visible atop the volcanic cone.
The reserve is a protected historic and ecological area; stick to paths to avoid trampling native coastal vegetation and follow your guide’s directions to protect fragile archaeological features.
Needed for stability during Segway practice and when exploring fort staircases.
Protects against coastal gusts that can make the summit feel much colder.
