  • Natural Navigation v. Instruments

In our Classroom Session we will cover topics relating to the tools we use for Navigation, basic compass concepts, how we go about gathering information, understanding it, and then putting it to work. You will test your abilities to create a navigation narrative by looking at a 3-D cutaway model and verbally taking your classmates on a journey around a dive site.

Then when we meet in Monterey, we will begin our day on the lawn at San Carlos Beach and do some dry runs of using triangulation, running different shaped courses, working as buddy teams, and creating a basic map.

Then we hop in the ocean and test our accuracy on the first dive by running shaped courses away and back to a buoy. You will be working in teams and challenged by incorporating the task-loadiness of navigation onto your base scuba skills platform. (which is why you are required to have previous cold water experience and Advanced Buoyancy)

Your second dive will be taking your Instructor on a proper tour of the Middle Reef by entering at one side of the beach and exiting the other. Along the way, each student will be responsible for a leg of the journey, and all of you will need to take notes about not just what interesting things you saw but also certain parameters we are interested in such as depths, times, and environment.

Navigation is a challenging and rewarding course and allows a diver to gain confidence as they build their underwater mental and physical maps. Mastering Navigation takes time and practice but will allow you to explore new dive sites safely and have more fun by knowing where you are and how to get home.
