Red Mountain is a bit of a misnomer, as it is neither red nor a mountain, but it is a lovely area to explore. It is Washington’s hottest AVA and smallest at only 2,382 acres. The warm weather tends to produce full-bodied, dark wines with firm tannins. It is known for producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. There are about 15 wineries to visit in this area and many others source their grapes from these vineyards.
The route begins along the Yakima River where you might catch a glimpse of eagles or other birds. Then you will enjoy beautiful tasting rooms and expansive views of the valley. This is our shortest route, at about 10 miles, and provides sweeping vistas of the valley. It has a one-mile stretch that is on a lightly traveled highway, however, we have ridden it many times and feel that it is entirely safe.
Bring plenty of water as the area can get warm, especially during summer rides.
