TOUR ITERNARY
Our Upper Loop tour begins in Gardiner, Montana and starts the day off with one of Yellowstone's most popular features, Mammoth Hot Springs. We will have a chance to explore these amazing travertine terraces early, before they become busy. As we make our way to the terraces, we pass through what used to be Fort Yellowstone, steeped in history and repurposed for use today. We then climb up onto the Yellowstone Plateau and Swan Lake Flats, where we have wildlife viewing opportunities as well as a view of Electric Peak, in addition to the greater Gallatin Mountain Range.
From there, we will continue to head south, passing by a collection of steam vents and cooked hillside known as Roaring Mountain. Then we arrive at the Norris Geyser Basin. This is the most dynamic basin in the park, home to the tallest active geyser in the world, Steamboat Geyser. Norris also boasts the hottest recorded thermal feature in a steam vent named Black Growler in addition to quite the collection of acid geysers and beautiful hot springs. Following our exploration of the Norris Geyser Basin, we will make our way towards the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Once we arrive in the Canyon area, we are able to take in stunning views of the Upper and Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River. The falls alone are impressive, being 109 and 308 feet tall, respectively, but the additional beauty of the canyon the river has carved makes the views that much more picturesque and memorable. Here there is an additional opportunity to diverge and head into Hayden Valley for more incredible landscapes and wildlife viewing.
After taking in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, we head up over Dunraven Pass, the highest road in the park. Passing by Mount Washburn, we make our way toward Tower Falls, looking for whatever wildlife presents itself on the way. After our viewing of Tower Falls, there are incredible landscapes and wildlife viewing opportunities. Additionally, Undine Falls presents itself on the way back to the town of Gardiner. Additional destinations may be possible throughout the tour.
