Moderate fitness: able to sustain a steady climb for 2–3 hours with short rests; good balance on uneven ground helps.
Beat the crowds and meet Lysefjorden at first light. This guided sunrise hike to Preikestolen includes pick-up from Stavanger, headlamps, and a buffet breakfast at the mountain lodge—an efficient, peaceful way to experience one of Norway’s most famous cliffs.
The sky is still iron-dark when the minibus pulls away from Stavanger. Windows fog with quiet conversation and woolen breath; the road narrows, lights recede, and the coast gives way to the thick, ancient pines that guard the trailhead. By headlamp we thread the first switchbacks, boots biting into damp soil, each step measured against the idea of arriving at a cliff that will be waiting—silent, vast, and hungry for the dawn.

Pickup times vary seasonally—confirm your exact pickup time the night before and book the morning you want to hike, not the night prior.
Trail includes wet stone and exposed sections; ankle-supporting boots with good tread improve comfort and safety.
Top layers cut the cold at the plateau—wind can make the exposed edge feel much colder than the forest.
Headlamps are included—keep them on in the forested approach to navigate roots and switchbacks safely.
Lysefjorden was carved by Pleistocene glaciers; Preikestolen’s dramatic, flat top is the result of repeated freeze-thaw and glacial scouring over millennia.
Stay on marked trails and pack out all waste; high foot traffic has prompted boardwalk repairs and strict rules against drones near the cliff to protect safety and wildlife.
Provide traction on wet stone and ankle support on uneven terrain.
Protects against cold, gusty conditions on the exposed plateau.
Early-morning sections are dark—hands-free light is necessary (supplied but bring a backup).
Carry layers, water, and personal snacks for the 5–6 hour hike portion.
