Things to Know

What should I wear?

  • First, don’t wear anything that you’d be afraid to get dirty. We’ll be working on traps being hauled from the ocean floor and it’s potentially messy. It can be 10-15 degrees cooler on the water so extra layers are smart. Consider a hat due to limited shade and any footwear is okay. In May and October, you may need a warm jacket, hat, and gloves. Please check the local forecast and remember if you bring it, you can always take it off.

What if it’s raining?

  • We operate the excursions rain or shine. Our boats do have some cover but are mostly exposed to the weather. Passengers can find shelter standing under the wheelhouse but available seating there is limited. Although we provide aprons, pants, and gloves we highly advise bringing your own foul weather gear. What if there’s a thunderstorm? If thunderstorms become a safety concern we will cancel the excursion or return to the dock if we’re underway. If we return without pulling traps or cancel outright all passengers get a full refund. Thunderstorms are frequently forecast during the summer, but we ’re rarely forced to cancel.

Can I buy lobsters after the cruise?

  • When the work is complete you have the option to choose lobsters from our onboard live tank. The lobsters can be purchased for wholesale “boat price” and either taken to go or next door to the Portland Lobster Company restaurant. The restaurant can cook your lobster, add corn, baked potato or fries, cole slaw, butter, etc. for $12.95 plus tax per lobster. A typical keeper lobster weighs 1 ¼ -1 ½ lbs. and may range from $6.00 - $9.00 per pound. If you wish to take multiple lobsters please contact us in advance to ensure availability.

Can I buy the same lobster we catch?

  • Not necessarily. Lobstering is fishing and we never know how successful we’ll be. We keep enough lobsters onboard so every passenger has the option to buy one, but there’s no way to guarantee we’ll catch enough for every passenger on every trip.

Is the Lucky Catch tour different than the St. Croix?

  • Yes, the Red and Gray Lucky Catch captain has a commercial lobster license so legal lobsters can be kept. The St. Croix has a demonstration license and must throw back all lobsters. The St. Croix does have additional lobsters available for purchase in an onboard live tank. The St. Croix hauls three traps with help from the passengers and visits the same lighthouses, islands, and forts.

Is there a bathroom on the boat?

  • The Gray Lucky Catch (14-passenger) does not have a bathroom. The Red Lucky Catch (20-passenger) and the St. Croix both have a low capacity bathroom suitable for emergency use only. The excursion is 80-90 minutes and we highly recommend using a restroom in advance.
