Other
Hiking

The tour opens at Tai Po Market MTR, where the city’s hum falls away and a patchwork of reservoirs and low ridges comes into view. Within twenty minutes on a lightweight hybrid, the road peels around the curved shoulder of Plover Cove Reservoir and the water begins to pull light like a sheet of glass. Riders trade traffic for wide shoulders, then clip out and shoulder their packs for a climb into moss-dark forest where streams dare you to follow them upstream to small, secret cascades.

Adventure Tips

Start at Tai Po Market Exit B

Meet outside Starbucks to ensure a timely departure; the guide gives a short bike-fit and safety briefing before rolling out.

Bring grippy shoes

Hiking sections include wet roots and short scrambles—trail runners or light hiking shoes are best.

Hydrate and layer

Carry at least 1–1.5 L water and a light wind shell—weather by the reservoir can shift quickly.

Ride within your limits

Roads are mixed surface with occasional steep pitches; use gears and walk technical sections if needed.

Local Insights

Wildlife

  • Chinese pangolin (rare; signs and digs may be spotted)
  • Grey heron and kingfishers along the reservoir edge

History

Plover Cove was transformed in the 1960s into one of Asia’s first sea-inlet freshwater reservoirs to supply Hong Kong’s growing population, reshaping tidal channels into storage basins.

Conservation

The area is managed for both water supply and recreation—respect marked trails and take all rubbish out; avoid disturbing fragile streamside vegetation.
