Suitable for hikers with a moderate level of fitness who can handle sustained uphill walking and intermittent stone steps
A direct, three-hour guided ascent up Platteklip Gorge carries you from the city’s edge to Table Mountain’s plateau. Expect steep stone steps, fragrant fynbos, and sweeping views — snacks, bottled water and hotel pickup from central Cape Town are included.
The city is still shedding sleep when the minibus pulls off the Atlantic Seaboard and drops you at the broad lip of Platteklip Gorge. A hard ribbon of stone cuts the lower face of Table Mountain here, a granite-strewn stairway that tilts the world upward. Your guide checks boots, distributes bottled water and snacks included with the tour, and points toward the switchback that will deliver you to the cableway station and the plateau above.

Begin at first light when the slope is cooler and the summit is less windy; afternoons bring stronger gusts and cloud.
Wear stiff-soled hiking shoes with good grip — the route is stone steps and slabs that can be slippery when wet.
Although bottled water is provided, carry an extra 500–750 ml for hot days and a windproof shell for summit gusts.
Cableway descent is available but not included — check operating status in advance in case you prefer not to retrace the gorge.
The mountain has been a navigational landmark for centuries and is known locally by names used by Cape Khoikhoi and San communities.
Table Mountain’s fynbos is a fragile, endemic ecosystem; stay on established paths to protect plants and minimize erosion.
Provide grip and ankle support on steep stone steps and uneven slabs.
Protects against sudden summit gusts and cooling winds.
