5–6 hours
Suitable for people in regular physical condition; requires about an hour of uphill walking with some uneven terrain.
Leave Tirana for a half-day escape into limestone galleries and a centuries-old fortress. Hike to Pellumbas Cave, explore its karst galleries by torchlight, then drive to Petrela Castle for panoramic views and medieval stonework.
A morning van peels away from downtown Tirana and the city’s hum recedes into stone terraces and orchards. Within thirty-five minutes the road narrows, and the air begins to smell of limestone and pine. At Pellumbas village the guide checks boots and bottles, then points to the path that climbs toward the cave: a clear line through scrub and oak that promises a compact, energetic hike.

Trail sections to the cave are rocky and can be slippery; closed-toe hiking shoes with good tread make the 1‑hour approach far more comfortable.
A torch is supplied, but a headlamp frees your hands for scrambling and steadier footing inside the cave.
Midday heat can bake exposed trail sections; morning departures give cooler air and better light at Petrela.
There are simple cafes near Petrela Castle and drivers often appreciate a tip—cash (lek) is useful in villages.
Pellumbas Cave shows evidence of prehistoric human use, while Petrela Castle has late-antiquity origins and was rebuilt in medieval times to guard the approaches to Tirana.
These karst landscapes are fragile—stick to marked trails, avoid touching cave formations, and pack out waste to minimize visitor impact.
Necessary for rocky, sometimes slippery approaches to the cave.
Hands-free light makes cave exploration safer and more comfortable.
Bring extra water in hot months even though 0.5L is provided.
