Suitable for travelers with moderate fitness who can handle sustained uphill walking and uneven terrain.
A private day trip from Zadar into Paklenica National Park that combines a steady forest climb to Lugarnica mountain hut with an optional ascent to a panoramic Vidikovac viewpoint. Ideal for hikers who want a guided, no-fuss entry to Velebit’s karst canyons.
You leave Zadar before dawn in a small black van, the city lights folding back into olive groves as the Adriatic shrinks in the rearview. A 45-minute drive climbs toward Velebit; limestone cliffs begin to appear like ship hulls ripped from the earth. At the park entrance the van drops you at a strip of parking where the air is cooler and pine resin dares you to breathe deeper.

Carry at least 2 liters of water per person; refill options are limited between the trailhead and Lugarnica hut.
Expect roots, loose scree and short exposed sections—light hiking boots with good grip will make the optional ascent far safer and more comfortable.
Bring sunscreen, a brimmed hat and a lightweight wind shell; the ridge can be much windier and more exposed than the forested approach.
Tickets are purchased at the park entrance—have cash or card ready to avoid delays at the start of the hike.
Paklenica’s trails trace centuries-old shepherd and woodcutting routes; during WWII parts of Velebit were used by resistance fighters, leaving informal footpaths still used today.
The karst landscape is fragile—stick to marked trails, avoid disturbing endemic plants, and carry out any trash to minimize impact.
Support and grip for rocky, rooty terrain and the steeper ascent to the viewpoint.
Keeps hydration and snacks accessible during the 3–4 hour hike portion.
Open ridgelines mean strong sun; UV exposure increases with altitude and reflection from rock.
summer specific
Useful for sudden wind or cooler temperatures on the ridge and during shoulder seasons.
