3 days (full-day sessions)
Participants should be in good physical health with strong swimming skills and ability to handle breath-hold training.
Take your freediving to the next level with Dive California’s PADI Advanced Freediver Course. This three-day course combines classroom theory, pool training, and open water dives off San Diego’s coast to build skill and confidence underwater.
Age 15+ • 3-Day Course
Elevate your freediving skills with the PADI Advanced Freediver Course, a three-day immersive experience. Engage in classroom learning, refine techniques in the pool, and conquer the ocean with two open water dives. Achieve personal goals in static and dynamic apnea while mastering essential safety procedures in a supportive environment.
Weekend 3 Days
Friday - Classroom 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. Saturday - Pool 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday - Ocean/Open Water 7 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
The Advanced Freediver course is designed to fulfill that personal need to refine and improve your freediving skills, allowing you to progress slowly while learning how your body performs during apnea.
Freediver Online Materials
The Advanced Freediver course consists of three main phases;
• Classroom/Knowledge development about advanced freediving techniques and equipment. You’ll study independently using the Freediver online materials as well as an Instructor-led class session. • Pool/Confined water training to learn stretching and relaxation techniques as well as refine static and dynamic apnea. • Goal – static apnea of 2 minutes, 30 seconds (2 minutes for freedivers younger than 18) and dynamic apnea of 50m/165ft (40 m/130ft for freedivers younger than 18) • Open water sessions – 2 Open Water dive sessions to practice deeper free immersion and constant weight freedives, along with additional buddy procedures and rescue techniques. • Goal – constant weight Freedive of 20m/66 ft, maximum 24m/80ft (15m/50ft for freedivers younger than 18)
• Be at least 15 years old. You need adequate swimming skills and need to be in good physical health. • Freediver – or qualifying certification from another freediving training agency – cross-over evaluation will be performed and will not be included in the course fee. • Paperwork: Complete the MEDICAL FORM, the Liability Release, and the Statement of Understanding.
Drink plenty of water before and between sessions to avoid dehydration, which can impact breath-hold performance.
Use relaxation and breath control learned in the pool before attempting deeper dives in open water.
Always dive with a trained buddy and practice safety drills regularly to mitigate risks underwater.
Spend time adjusting to ocean temperatures and currents before deep diving to avoid surprise physical stress.
La Jolla’s coastline has long been a site of marine research and conservation, with underwater ecological reserves protecting delicate habitats since the 1970s.
Dive California supports sustainable freediving practices that minimize disturbance to protected kelp forests and marine life, promoting ocean stewardship.
Provides thermal protection and flexibility for various water temperatures during pool and ocean dives.
