Experience the serene beauty of a 10.5-mile paddle on the Ocmulgee River, starting from the exclusive Towaliga River Retreat. Navigate narrow channels, encounter small shoals, and relax at Falling Creek. Enjoy a thrilling finish at Dames Ferry, with options for multi-day camping adventures. A perfect blend of tranquility and excitement awaits!
This 10.5 mile stretch of the Ocmulgee ranks high on our list of favorites, because it's basically our backyard! Between the lack of a well-developed public put-in, and the distance to a public take out, this is also one of the quietest sections of river above Macon.
For this trip, our shuttle will pick you up at Popes Ferry and transport you to the Towaliga River Retreat in Juliette, where we will utilize their private access to launch. This access is available to others, as well, for a small day use fee, or complimentary with a stay in one of their nicely appointed waterfront cabins. Visit www.towaligariverretreat.com to book a cabin. Drop us a note if you do, and we'll shuttle you back there at the end of the trip.
The paddle starts off with a roughly 3/4 mile exploration of a narrow channel that separates Zellner Island from the right bank of the river, before joining the main channel of the Ocmulgee. Small shoals break up the flat water mileage, and unique river cabins and full time residences dot the banks. The mouth of Falling Creek, about 3 miles above the take out, makes for a particularly good spot to cool off on hot days. Once back on the water from there, you'll shortly find yourself at the historic Dames Ferry, where OOE has access to a privately owned paddle-in campground that's currently being developed. The shoals just below the Hwy 18 bridge will get the adrenaline pumping one last time before the final mellow 2 miles to Popes, where your vehicle awaits.
Don't forget to ask us how we can turn this into a multi-day option by camping at Dames Ferry, with a short morning paddle to Popes on day two, or go all the way to Amerson River Park for a second full day of adventure!
