Join artist Jan Norsetter at Wisconsin’s Taliesin Estate for an intermediate plein air painting workshop blending landscape, history, and technique.
September 19-21, 2025 | Friday 12:30pm - Sunday 3pm | Ages 18+
Join artist Jan Norsetter for an immersive Plein Air Painting Workshop at the stunning Taliesin estate. Experience the beauty of the Driftless region while honing your skills in color mixing and composition. Enjoy a unique blend of outdoor painting, historic architecture, and community exploration, all in a serene, inspiring setting.
Painting en plein air is the best way to learn to paint expressively! In this class we will work on color mixing, brush handling, thumbnail sketches/composition/editing, paint application, brush care, all while using a tiny bit of Gamsol or no solvents at all. There are lots of things to think about when painting. When painting outdoors there are even more. Learn what it means to edit out what isn't needed and paint the essentials. Learn to make a plan first, then follow it. Be prepared to paint 2, 3 or even more paintings. Thursday afternoon arrival time will allow workshop participants ample free time to explore the local community, natural attractions of the Driftless region and the Taliesin Estate and will include an evening lecture in the Taliesin Hillside Theater with the instructor (included in workshop fee).
Plein Air workshop participants will need to bring their basic own plein air painting equipment: Personal easel, brushes, oil paints, and enough boards or paper to paint at least 2 paintings per day. Please reach out if you need assistance with the equipment. A specific list will be sent by the instructor in advance of the class.
Artist Jan Norsetter is an award-winning oil painter known for vibrant landscape paintings en plein air and evocatively detailed studies in still life. Norsetter also practices the decorative art of rosemaling, using skill and an artist’s sensibility to embellish items traditional and modern in an age-old form. Norsetter sets up her easel in the open air, working outdoors surrounded by a world that imbues her paintings with a sense of place. Her landscapes capture exact but imaginative views of countryside in every season—close to home in Wisconsin and the US, France, Italy, Ireland, Scotland and Norway. She often uses blog posts to record progress on a series of paintings and impressions of a particular location. Norsetter holds advanced degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in fine arts and art education. In addition to her work as an artist, she teaches landscape painting and rosemaling. Four Wisconsin-based galleries represent Norsetter’s work: Pink Llama Gallery in Cedarburg, River Arts Gallery in Prairie du Sac, UFrame-It Gallery in Madison, and Woodland Studios in Stoughton.
This one-of-a-kind weekend experience is designed to allow you to disconnect, immerse and explore. “Taliesin works like a charm on everybody that comes within its atmosphere,” writes Wright to his friend and client Darwin Martin in 1929. To experience Taliesin in its fullest, you will access a variety of historic spaces and the pristine rural landscape of Driftless Wisconsin; complementary housing is included in the workshop experience.
Please note that we are not aiming at being a hotel or resort, but focus on carrying out the timeless elements of the Taliesin Legacy - connecting people, architecture, and the land.
Each of you will be housed in a single room across the Taliesin estate in rustic Taliesin Fellowship dwellings, with shared bathrooms, access to a kitchenette, and living space.
Each workshop includes a welcome reception in the main residence and a tour of the buildings. Classroom instruction will be held in the world-renowned Hillside Drafting Studio, and in other designated spaces across the Taliesin estate. Lunch and breakfast will be served at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, while dinner is a wonderful opportunity to explore the local artisanal community individually or as a group - stay tuned for details.
The workshop check-in will begin Thursday afternoon at 3 pm. Please arrive at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center at 5607 County Rd C Spring Green, WI 53588, and walk into the building. Staff will welcome you upon arrival and usher you to your rooms.
Adult (Ages 18+): $1,800 per person Includes breakfast and lunches, workshop instruction, materials, guided tour, guestroom for three nights on the estate, lecture in the Hillside Theater, and welcome reception in the main house
