Join us for a four-course hiking series in Glacier National Park as we explore the park’s historic fire lookouts. Each day, participants will hike to different lookouts, gaining a deeper understanding of fire ecology, wildfire history, and the vital role fire plays in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Along the way, we'll discuss Glacier's unique landscapes, flora, and fauna, while learning about fire monitoring, prevention, and the strategies used to manage wildfires in the park. With breathtaking views and expert-guided discussions, this course offers a hands-on experience of Glacier's wilderness while fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural forces that shape its stunning landscapes.

Itinerary

Subject to change due to trail closures and weather Field Camp at 7 a.m. and have a brief introduction of the day and safety talk before departure. Each day, we will travel to a different fire lookout located in Glacier National Park. The courses will end by 5 p.m. and will not be canceled due to weather.

Physical Requirements

  • Total distance (roundtrip): up to 3 miles
  • Total elevation change: minimal

Park Entrance Fees

Participants are responsible for purchasing their park entry passes prior to the hike. These can be purchased online. A Vehicle Reservation is NOT required. Participation in your hike with the Glacier Institute acts as your Vehicle Reservation. These details will be included in your confirmation email.

What to Bring

  • Trail lunch, plenty of water and snacks for the day
  • Comfortable hiking shoes, at least 1-2 liter water bottle, backpack, rain gear, hat, and sunscreen
  • Weather can be varied so please be prepared with appropriate clothing, especially warm layers for potential snow and high winds
  • Binoculars are very useful, but optional, as well as field guides that interest you
