About

  • See much more than if you explore on your own
  • A central meeting point makes for a seamless start
  • Take in the Victorian architecture while you walk about 1.5 miles

Step back in time and discover the history of Old Louisville during an immersive 90-minute walking tour through one of the largest historic preservations districts in the United States. Listen to stories of the bourbon barons, racetrack royalty, and the titans of tobacco who used to reside in the opulent mansions and inviting townhouses on St. James Court and Millionaires Row. At the same time, you'll learn about the wide variety of architectural styles embodied in the grand homes along Ormsby Avenue and around Olmsted-designed Central Park. In addition, a friendly guide will take you through secluded walking courts like Floral Terrace and gaslit Belgravia Court, areas that you probably wouldn't find on your own.

Highlights

  • Grand Homes and a Neighborhood Undergoing Revitalization! With more than a thousand structures spread out over 40 square blocks, Old Louisville appeals to old house lovers and fans of late 19th and early 20th century architecture. Located south of the downtown area of Louisville, it is a transitional neighborhood that is gaining fame for its fascinating history, quirky residents, and colorful characters. This tour is designed to expose you to all aspects of the neighborhood, not just to show off its most beautiful mansions.
  • Legends and Lore! A gnarled tree rose up on the spot where a majestic maple cherished by local witches once stood, at the corner of Sixth and Park. When the city chopped down the original tree, townsfolk incurred the wrath of the coven, who sent a tornado to destroy Louisville in revenge. Visitors often leave offerings on the twisted trunk to make amends.
  • An Especially Regal Residence! Known early on as "Conrad's Castle," today's Conrad-Caldwell House Museum can be toured before or after your tour—but only on select days and for a separate fee. Our walking tour takes place entirely out-of-doors, and we do not enter any structures, as most of the houses in Old Louisville are private residences. We admire the impressive Richardsonian-Romanesque architecture of Conrad's Castle from the outside while learning about life on the inside.
  • A Beaux Arts Beauty! Completed in 1905, the Ferguson Mansion once counted as the grandest home in the city. A splendid example of Paris-inspired architecture, the 25,000-square-foot residence is headquarters for the Filson Historical Society today. Visits can be arranged separately on their website.
  • Nature in the Heart of the City! Just like its famous cousin in New York City, Old Louisville's Central Park was designed by world-renowned landscape genius Frederick Law Olmsted. With 14 acres of native tree species and shaded walkways, this four-square-block space counts as the green heart of the neighborhood and the front yard to St. James Court, the most famous residential enclave in the Old Louisville historic preservation district.
