About This Adventure

Embark on an unforgettable adventure through the stunning Navajo sandstone canyons of the San Rafael Swell. Experience thrilling hikes, breathtaking views from the canyon's summit, and the option to free-rappel 90 feet through a magnificent natural arch, all while exploring ancient pictographs and the rich history of the area.

Occulus Canyon Tour

Deep within the spectacular Navajo sandstone canyons of the San Rafael Swell lies a myriad of hidden gems. Our adventure begins with an exciting hike and scramble through an impressive slot canyon. Along the way we pass towering walls decorated with desert-varnish and one of the most spectacular Barrier-style pictograph panels in the area. At the top of the slot canyon we reach the high-point of our trip with magnificent 360 degree views of Robbers Roost, Canyonlands, Bears Ears, and Henry Mountains. It is here we begin our descent down a second canyon to an awe-inspiring natural arch. Guests have the option for a spectacular free-rappel 90 ft through the Occulus (natural arch) and into the vast alcove below that was used by Ancient Puebloan Indians.

Adventure Tips

Bring plenty of water

The San Rafael Swell’s desert environment is dry and hot, so carry at least 2 liters per person.

Wear sturdy hiking shoes

Expect uneven rock surfaces and scrambling; shoes with solid grip will keep you steady.

Rappelling is optional but technical

If choosing to rappel, be prepared for a 90-foot vertical descent and follow all safety instructions carefully.

Check weather before booking

Flash floods can occur unexpectedly in slot canyons—avoid trips during or after storms.
