The La Jolla Shores is located in La Jolla, California, adjacent to Scripps Park, Pier, Oceanographic Institute, and Scripps Aquarium. The beach is within the boundaries of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve & Marine Sanctuary, so taking or hunting of marine life is not permitted. In the summer season, the beach is often crowded with sunbathers, surfers, standup paddleboarders, swimmers, and scuba divers. The underwater topography is composed of the rippled sand bottom. This habitat looks at first glance like a desert wasteland but is instead filled with life. During the summer, large groups of leopard sharks are congregating along the surf zone in depths of 3 to 8 feet, often at the southernmost end of La Jolla Shores.
Sheep head, Sand Dollars, Sting Ray, Rock Sole, Yellow Tail, Horn Sharks, Black Sea Bass, Bat Rays are common, as well as Sea Stars, Octopi, Crabs, Spiny Lobster, Squid, Harbor Seals, Sea Hares, Fringe-head fish, Fairy Hydroids, Giant Sheep-crabs, Lion’s mane Nudibranchs. In the summer months, it’s not common to see Leopard Sharks and Soup-fin Sharks (also known as Tope Sharks). This dive site is densely populated with marine life, you don’t need to look hard to find marine life. The abrupt drop and abundance of marine life help to explain why migrating whales can often be spotted close to shore.
