About

  • In addition to the 1 1/2 hour tour route we show you the backcountry with its natural arches, Anasazi petroglyphs, and ancient Anasazi dwellings.
  • The backcountry of Monument Valley is a restricted area and only guided tours are allowed.
  • We finish with a visit to Sand Springs, the Totem Pole and Yei Bi Chei rock
  • A visit to a Navajo woman’s hogan is optional. At the hogan, Effie Yazzie will demonstrate Navajo rug weaving and your guide will talk about Navajo life:
    • What is it like to grow up and live out here?
    • Why are there male and female hogans?
    • Why do they always face east?
    • What native plants do we use, and how?

The tour continues through an area of natural arches and Anasazi petroglyphs and ruins.

Who were the Anasazi? What happened to them?

Things to Remember

  • We operate on daylight savings time. Utah time, not Arizona time.
  • We start all of our tours from the Visitor's Center in Monument Valley.
  • We have no set time for our tours. You get to set the time for your tour.
  • Highway 163 runs north and south through Monument Valley. 1/4 mile north of Arizona, Utah state line there is an intersection. Turn East. Go 4 miles and you are at the Visitor's Center.

There is a $5.00 per person Entrance Fee. This is a Navajo Tribal park, not a National Park. In the parking lot there is an information booth. At the booth ask for Carlos Phillips or Carl Phillips. We work together.

Adventure Tips

Respect Restricted Areas

This tour passes through restricted Navajo backcountry; stay with your guide at all times to protect sacred sites.

Wear Sun Protection

Bring sunscreen and a hat—the desert sun can be intense even on cooler days.

Hydrate Generously

Carry water as dry desert air and light activity can dehydrate quickly.

Camera Ready

Charge your gear and bring extra memory cards to capture the petroglyphs and sweeping natural arches.

Local Insights
