Malaga's history dates back over 2,800 years, which makes it one of the longest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe. It was founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC and over its history has been ruled by the Romans, the Moors, and the Christian monarchs, all of whom have left their mark on the city's culture and architecture. For centuries Malaga was an important port and a major centre of trade while today it is a thriving tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world.
Our journey through Malaga’s past begins at the iconic Plaza de la Constitución, the very heart of the city's historic centre. As we navigate the winding alleys of the Old Town, you'll visit the most iconic sites: the majestic Alcazaba, a well-preserved fortress that stands as a testament to Malaga's Moorish heritage. The clear relic of Roman times on the other hand is the Roman Theatre, an ancient site dating back to the 1st century AD. The city’s Christian past manifests itself when you look at the grandeur of Malaga Cathedral, affectionately known as "La Manquita" due to its unfinished tower. All those influences harmoniously coexist within the cityscape making it ever more interesting. Walking around we'll also pay homage to Malaga's most famous son, Pablo Picasso, in front of the Picasso Museum - this is where we will tell you about the life and legacy of this world-renowned artist, and learn about his deep connection to the city that shaped his artistic vision. Additionally, we'll touch upon the achievements of another local legend, actor Antonio Banderas, and his contributions to Malaga's cultural scene.
Join us on our Malaga Historic Centre Tour and immerse in the city's rich history, culture, and artistic spirit. Our local, expert guides will help you gain a deeper understanding of Malaga's past and present, and uncover the hidden treasures that make it so magical.
