About Itinerary KAILUA PIER PICK UP Our semi private tour bus will arrive at 7am for pickup at Kailua Pier, with a local guide to help you prepare for a day of exploring the island of Kona, Big Island.
KEALAKEKUA BAY Our first stop takes you back to one of the important historic location sites in Hawaii where the first westerner, Captain James Cook, landed on island of Hawaiʻi. Cook was the first British explorer to establish contact with the Hawaiian Islands until killed in a skirmish with Native Hawaiians right here in Kealakekua Bay. A white obelisk on the shore of Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park memorializes his death and on the east side of the bay you'll find Hikiau Heiau, a sacred temple dedicated to the Hawaiian god, Lono.
PU'UHONUA O HONAUNAU NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK Step back in time and into a piece of living Hawaiian history – The Puʻuhonua, or place of refuge, holds the barren lava fields of Kona and lives by the name City of Refuge. This was the reality of old Hawaii, where a ruling class of Aliʻi (chiefs) managed the island of Hawaii through strict enforcement of Kapu. A tour of this park is one of the top things to do on the west (Kona) side of the Big Island and an excellent way to experience traditional Hawaiian culture.
