This tour isn't merely a walk through London's streets; it's a passage through time, uncovering stories and landmarks that have played a pivotal role in the LGBT+ community's struggle and triumphs.
As we commence our exploration, we'll delve into the intricate tales of monarchs and their favoured companions during the Stuart period. The relationships of figures such as King James I/VI will provide us with a fascinating glimpse into the fluid understandings of sexuality across different eras. The majestic Banqueting House won't just stand as a testament to royal grandeur but will also serve as a backdrop to these personal histories, reflecting the changing societal norms.
Our journey will take a literary turn as we explore the legacy of Oscar Wilde, a towering figure in LGBT+ history. Wilde's life, marked by both his extraordinary literary contributions and the ostracisation he faced due to his orientation, is a poignant reminder of the journey the LGBT+ community has undertaken, from silence to empowerment and recognition.
The courage and resilience of the transgender and non-binary community will be highlighted through the story of the Chevalier D'Eon de Beaumont, a trans fencer whose life challenged binary gender perceptions. In contrast, the evolution of Trafalgar Square from a simple plaza to a symbol of Pride's journey will be a vivid illustration of the LGBT+ community's ongoing fight for recognition and acceptance.
The narratives of the 20th century, particularly the World Wars, will provide a sombre backdrop as we honour the contributions and sacrifices of women who loved women and gay men. The story of Alan Turing, a key figure in cracking the Enigma code who later faced persecution, will underscore the poignancy of the struggle for acceptance and equality.
Our private tour will also encompass the modern advancements in LGBT+ rights, highlighting the significant legal milestones and the ongoing challenges faced by the community in both the UK and international contexts. We will examine the societal shifts and the evolving legal landscape, giving you a comprehensive understanding of the journey so far and the path ahead.
As we wander through the streets of Westminster and other hidden corners of London, we'll discover the secret histories of 'molly houses' and the significance of open spaces like St. James's Park as sanctuaries for men seeking companionship during times of criminalisation.
By the end of our journey, you'll have gained not only a deeper appreciation of London's LGBT+ heritage but also an understanding of the ongoing challenges and triumphs that continue to shape this vibrant and diverse community. Gareth (5/5) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "An engaging yet casual tour taking in iconic locations and interesting facts under the careful guidance of a knowledgeable tour guide."
Stephen (5/5) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "It was fascinating to revisit familiar London landmarks afresh through tour guide Phil’s gay lens. Intriguing to explore the legacies of George Villiers, Oscar Wilde, Molly Houses and Geroge Canning. Phil skilfully wove a rainbow thread through the 17th & 18th centuries, Great and Second World Wars. Informative, enlightening and enhanced with a fun quiz, the tour itself was the prize, truly a winner!"
Andrew (5/5) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "LGBTQI+ rights are human rights and this is very much what this tour is about. A mixture of history and politics prevails (as you’d expect) but it’s all very accessible. There are many amusing anecdotes, shocking details and interesting facts to be had and it’s been assembled wonderfully by guide Phillip Scott who is both charming and engaging. When I say that I was a heterosexual man on this tour, I say it to highlight that this tour is absolutely for everyone. Give it a go, there’s so much that you will have knowledge of but can learn more about on this tour. Also, it’s constantly updating because of the times we live in. Highly recommended."
