Light to moderate fitness — good balance and basic mobility are helpful; no prior climbing experience required.
Climb a 20–30m granite face on Morro da Babilônia with certified guides and sweeping views of Sugarloaf Mountain. This three-hour beginner class teaches knots, belaying and technique while you ascend multiple times under expert supervision.
The humidity of Rio hangs in the air as you tie your harness and look up—a smooth 20 to 30-meter face of granite rising above Praia Vermelha. Guanabara Bay sprawls to your left, boats tracing pale paths on the water, while Sugarloaf Mountain keeps silent company across the inlet. In this one-afternoon introduction on Morro da Babilônia, climbing sheds its mystique: ropes hum, teachers demonstrate knots, and the city’s scale rearranges itself into lines, roofs and palm trees beneath your feet.

Arrive 10–15 minutes early at the soldier statue in front of the Sugarloaf cable car — guides wear orange Companhia da Escalada shirts.
Provide accurate height and weight during booking so guides can fit harnesses and set safe belays.
Wear closed-toe athletic shoes and shorts or flexible pants; climbing shoes are supplied but you’ll need comfortable clothes for scrambling.
Bring sunscreen and at least 1 liter of water — the southern exposure can bake the rock by midday.
Urca developed around military installations and the Sugarloaf cable car, which has moved visitors between the bay and the granite peaks for over a century.
Climbing is regulated by local groups; follow guides’ instructions, stick to established routes, and pack out trash to protect fragile coastal flora.
Needed for the short trail approach; climbing shoes are provided for the actual climbs.
Flexible clothing improves range of motion and comfort on the rock.
