7-10 Hours
Perched east of the Columbia Icefield, Tangle Ridge is one of the best hikeable viewpoints in the range. From the summit, hikers can glimpse Mount Athabasca, Snowdome, and a sea of peaks across the range. A good trail leads up into the forest before emerging into the alpine where a faint path in scree (small stones) rises to ridgecrest. This hike involves a considerable amount of elevation gain 1150 m over 10.8 km of distance, but lightweight packs and a steady pace make it suitable for a wide range of adventurers.
Your guide, Ben Nearingburg, is a Jasper-local and author of several guidebooks who help you connect with the history, and ecology of the Jasper region. At the summit of Tangle Ridge, we can munch on a tasty lunch while we have ample opportunity to enjoy the landscape. We provide hiking poles, lunch, and water for your ascent; all you need to bring is a pair of boots and a sense of adventure.
What is included? Guiding Hiking Poles Picnic Lunch
What does a day on the trail look like? Summiting Tangle Ridge is a big day in the mountains, and with 1150 meters of elevation gain we need to get an early start. Our day starts with a morning meeting at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre after which we set off to the trailhead, a ~15 minute drive North towards Jasper (transportation to the trailhead is not included, contact us if you need transportation). The trail can be steep at places, but with a steady pace we hike upwards and are rewarded with a spectacular summit view (and tasty summit picnic).
How should I prepare? This route climbs 1150 vertical meters and can be quite energetic for those from lower elevations. While the route itself does not require any specific preparation, it is strongly recommended for guests to be comfortable hiking up steep hills for 3-4 hours at a time broken up with short breaks. Contact us if you would like more information on the route.
What is not included? Transportation to the Trailhead Personal Equipment (see list below)
Are there any risks? Any travel in the mountains comes with some risks. All guests will be required to read, understand, and agree to our Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumptions of Risks and Indemnity Agreement which fully details risks associated with this adventure.
