Catania, “six times destroyed and six times reborn”, it’s a town full of history. It was founded in 729 a.c. by Calcide’s people on a preexisting native village and it has a thousand-year old history that can be portrayed through a sequence of dominations. Their ruins enrich Sicily’s artistic, architectural and cultural heritage. Due to several earthquakes and eruptions destructions, there’s no sign of the Greek domination, while traces of the Roman Period can be seen and visited. The Roman Theatre (II century), the Odeon (III century) and the Amphitheatre (II century) are a few among them.
The puppets theatre (known as Opira de’ pupi) is a not to be missed folkloristic show which arises from Carolingian legends and which had had an oral transmission throughout centuries. Storytellers used to narrate orally French Paladins Orlando and Rinaldo’ great deeds and the War against Saracens. A show which is not for children only!
The best way to catch Catania’s soul after all, is through its street food and restaurants. Catania has a rich and varied cookery tradition. Among its specialties, deli, colored water ice and pastries are a few. And moreover, you should not forget to stop at a booth to get a Zammù or some other delicious drink when the weather is too hot!
According to Homer’s Odyssey (VI century a.c.), Ulysses passed through the seaside villages of Acicastello and Acitrezza to get back home, in Itaca. In Acitrezza, you will see the amazing huge sea stacks that Cyclops Polyphemus threw against Ulysses’s ships to make them sink. The legend tells that Polyphemus was drunk and was blinded by Ulysses (actually sea stacks are only volcanic formations). In Acitrezza is also possible to visit Lachea Isle, in the middle of its bay.
The Medieval Castle in Acicastello, which rises up on an age-old elevation of a volcanic platform and that has been the setting of the war between King Martino and Artale Aragona, is also open to visitors.
