Oxford, Lewis Carroll, and the Real Alice in Wonderland
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, originated in Oxford.
Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was a tutor at Christ Church, Oxford, and it was here that he met young Alice and her sisters.
The story’s creation is famously linked to a boat trip to Godstow Lock on a July afternoon in 1862. Legend has it that this is when Carroll first spun the story for Alice and her sisters however the whimsical stories came from many similar days which along with is his young companions, inspired the tales of Alice’s adventures in Wonderland.
The "real" Alice, Alice Liddell, was a curious and imaginative child, much like her literary counterpart. When she begged Carroll, or rather Charles to write the stories down the manuscript was initially a personal gift for Alice, later was elaborated into the book that we know today.
Oxford is home to several key sites tied to the legacy of Alice in Wonderland. A highlight is Christ Church, where visitors can explore the stunning dining hall, believed to have inspired scenes in the Queen of Hearts' court. The college also features a portrait of Carroll, adding to its connection with the tale. This dining hall also inspired the Hogwarts dining hall of Harry Potter and some of the Harry Potter locations are along our route.
The Alice Shop, located nearby, is another must-visit for fans. It has a charming collection of Alice memorabilia.

“An outstanding guide for inside Christchurch college. Most knowledgeable about the founding history of the college and having access to some of the interior sections was very interesting. Went to an Evensong service at the Christchurch Cathedral and afterwards learnt about the stained glass windows. I would highly recommend her”.
