7–8 days
Good aerobic fitness with experience on multi-day hikes; ability to carry a light daypack and cope with prolonged uphill sections.
The Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and acclimatization-friendly approaches, combining rainforest, high desert and glacial ridges across 7–8 days. This 8-day itinerary gives you pole-pole pacing, expert support, and a route designed to maximize summit odds while minimizing altitude risk.
A pre-dawn wind arrives like an usher, slipping beneath the flap of a tent on Barafu Ridge. Headlamps bob in a line of slow, deliberate footsteps as the climbing party inches away from the ridge toward a freezing, blue-haloed sky. By the time the sun pries the horizon open, the line reaches Stella Point and then presses on—each breath a bargaining with altitude, each step a small victory until at last Uhuru Peak appears, a jagged rim above a cloud sea.

Follow the guide’s pace—move slowly and hydrate constantly; the itinerary’s ‘trek high, sleep low’ days are designed to reduce AMS risk.
Temperatures can plummet well below freezing—use a down jacket, wind shell and warm gloves for the midnight ascent.
Sturdy, broken-in waterproof boots and gaiters protect ankles and keep volcanic scree out of your shoes during long descents.
Porters carry up to 20kg by park rules; pack a comfortable daypack for summit essentials and personal items.
Kilimanjaro is a relic of three volcanic cones—Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira—and its slopes have supported Chagga agricultural communities for centuries.
The park enforces porter weight limits and rescue fees; choose operators who pay fair wages, follow Leave No Trace and support AMREF evacuation coverage.
Provides critical warmth at high camp and during the summit push.
Support and traction for mixed terrain—forest roots, rocky scrambles and scree slopes.
Needed for cold nights at Barafu and high camp.
Summit bid starts around midnight—reliable light is essential.
