Trail Breaker Kennel is a mushing operation based in Fairbanks, Alaska, founded by Iditarod champion Susan Butcher. The kennel preserves and shares the culture of Alaskan dog mushing by operating guided experiences that connect visitors with champion Alaskan Huskies and the day-to-day life of a working kennel.
The kennel offers five distinct experiences: Beer and Puppies (a 60-minute backstage tour with puppy time), Kennel Visit (a one-hour guided tour along the Tanana River), Alaskan Dog Sledding (4-Mile Ride), Sled Dog Cart Ride (five-passenger rig), and the Sled Dog Sampler (2-Mile Ride). Each tour includes direct interaction with sled dogs, interpretation from knowledgeable mushing guides, and insight into training, dog care, and regional mushing history.
Trail Breaker Kennel emphasizes authentic education and guided access: guests learn how teams are handled, how sled dogs are conditioned for endurance, and how mushing shaped life in Interior Alaska. The operation is suitable for visitors who want close-up animal encounters, photographic opportunities in winter landscapes, or introductory sled rides led by experienced mushers. Featured on The Adventure Collective, Trail Breaker Kennel combines legacy, hands-on learning, and memorable outdoor adventure without compromising on animal welfare or guest safety.
