Suitable for ages 12 and up, this course covers everything from identifying kayaks and gear to handling emergencies, ensuring you’re well-prepared for your next adventure on the water.

Basic Kayak Skills Safety Course

Description:

Our Basic Kayak Skills and Safety Course is designed to familiarize students with the various types of recreational vessels, equipment and intended use. Our goal is to help students identify high-risk and potentially dangerous scenarios as to better prevent recreational accidents. In this course students will learn basic skills, how to prepare as well as the best recommended way to respond to common emergencies.

This course is suitable for all ages and skill levels (12+) and something the family can enjoy together.


Course Details:

In this course, participants will learn the following:

  • How to identify types of kayaks and their intended use.
  • Learn about kayak-related gear and how to use it including but not limited to PFD education.
  • Learn about how to prepare for an upcoming activity, how to create a plan and what to watch out for.
  • How to identify high-risk factors and possible dangers including but not limited to water and weather related hazards.
  • How to identify health related symptoms and basic first aid concepts.
  • How to handle water emergencies and techniques to use when submerged in the water.
  • Practice water-related skills and exercises including but not limited to swimming, treading water and entering and exiting vessels on the water.
  • Learn how to use emergency equipment such as a bilge pump, throw bag and radio.
  • Learn paddle-related skills and techniques as well as application of those techniques.

Level of Difficulty: This tour is suitable for beginners.


Duration: 4 Hours


Limitations: All participants must be 12 years or older to participate in this basic kayak skills and safety course. The total combined weight limit for boats must not exceed 375lbs. Pets are not permitted on this experience.

Course is available all individuals who acknowledge the ability to perform the following essential eligibility criteria.

  1. Breathe independently (i.e., not require medical devices to sustain breathing)
  2. Independently maintain sealed airway passages while under water
  3. Independently hold head upright without neck / head support
  4. Manage personal care independently or with assistance of a companion
  5. Manage personal mobility independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance
  6. Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with assistance of a companion
  7. Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket*
  8. Get on / off or in / out of a paddle craft independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance*
  9. Independently get out and from under a capsized paddlecraft*
  10. Remount or reenter the paddlecraft following deep water capsize independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance*
  11. Maintain a safe body position while attempting skills, activities and rescues listed in the appropriate Course Outline, and have the ability to recognize and identify to others when such efforts would be unsafe given your personal situation*
  12. Comfortably swim up to 100 yards without stopping.

Recommendations:

What to Wear; Students should wear a swimsuit and bring light layers as well as shoes that can be removable easily. We highly recommend hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Instructions:

Check-In; Students MUST arrive to our Clearly Tahoe Rental Tent 15 minutes prior to scheduled course for check-in. All participants must be prepared to complete electronic liability waivers prior to departure. (Adults for children).

Our Clearly Tahoe Rental Tent is located at the South end of the park, opposite the boat launch. Your instructors will meet you at the tent.
