Suitable for people in average physical condition; involves short swims and easy boarding from a small boat.
Slide off Holbox’s ferry and into a private boat that threads white sandbanks, flamingo flats and a freshwater spring. This 2.5–3.5 hour tour visits Punta Mosquito (or Isla Pájaros), Passion Island and the renewing waters of Yalahau.
You step off the ferry into Holbox’s slow rhythm — golf carts hum, the air tastes of salt and grilled fish, and a small yellow office one block from the dock becomes the portal to a quieter sea. The boat cuts through shallow turquoise like a knife through glass; the water parts respectfully, revealing white sandbars that seem to float just below the surface. Birds pick at the margins, and the skipper points toward a sandbank that, for much of the year, hosts flocks so dense they look like a moving shoreline.

Operators may change the itinerary to Isla Pájaros or cancel for safety—call or email at least a day before your trip.
The low-latitude sun is intense on exposed sandbanks; reef-safe sunscreen protects both you and marine life.
Soft sand and shallow flats mean barefoot or water shoes are best for hopping on and off the boat and walking sandbanks.
Water is included but having a dry bag for valuables and a bottle for sipping keeps hands free while swimming.
Holbox sits on the Yucatán’s northern shelf and has long been a fishing and seafaring zone; local communities historically relied on seasonal catches and small-scale trade with the mainland.
The area’s sandbanks, mangroves and seagrass are sensitive—use reef-safe sunscreen, keep distance from nesting birds, and follow guides’ instructions to minimize impact.
