About This Adventure

Explore the rich history of England and Scotland through its stunning castles, from the ancient fortress of Bamburgh to the cinematic Alnwick and Warkworth. Discover the tales of kings, Vikings, and bishops, and immerse yourself in the captivating stories that shaped the North East's identity over centuries.

England and Scotland fought for three hundred years across the border, resulting in the North East having the greatest number of Castles in England and shaping the region's strong and passionate identity.

Bamburgh and Lindisfarne The imposingfortress of Bamburgh has been occupied by humans for at least three thousand years. What makes the castle famous is its history as a fortress during the Dark Ages and a medieval castle belonging to the Kings of England. The Castle has seen a renaissance with its inclusion in the series Last Kingdom. Nearby, Holy Island is the monastery where the Viking age began.

Alnwick and Warkworth Castle’s don’t get much better than Alnwick and Warkworth! Both Castles had belonged to the Percy family – vast landowners and defenders of the English border against the Scots! Today Alnwick is best known for its inclusion in film and TV shows, from Harry Potter to Dungeons and DragonsHonour Among Thieves, and Downtown Abbey.

Bishop Auckland The Bishops of Durham had lived in the palace opposite the cathedral, but over time moved to Bishop Auckland. The impressive castle still exists today and incorporates both the history of various bishops and their achievements (and faults), but also the faith museum covering the history of faith in the British Isles.
