Experience the grandeur of James Moore's historic town home, built between 1797 and 1801. Nestled on a scenic hill, this unique tour offers breathtaking views of the Mississippi River and the surrounding landscape. Discover the rich history of Natchez as you explore the opulence of its most prominent citizens.
Wealthy merchant-planter James Moore purchased a hilly lot on Canal Street closest to the river bluff, an area that was reserved by Spanish city plans for the homes of the most prominent and wealthiest Natchez citizens.
Constructed between 1797 and 1801, Moore’s expansive town home, built into the side of the hill, enjoyed a commanding view of the Spanish park and promenade immediately below, of the adjacent bluff area framing the venerable Mississippi River with its splendid sunsets, and of the vast lands beyond awaiting their impending Louisiana Purchase.
The hilltop views and historic architecture make for excellent photo opportunities.
The house was a focal point during Natchez's prosperous antebellum period, reflecting the wealth and social stratification of early Southern society.
