During this tour, we will discuss the geological transformation of the valley, Ahtna and Dena’ina stewardship of the land in this region, and present-day Palmer’s agricultural roots from homesteaders in the early 1900s to the Matanuska Colony Project of the 1930s.
Stop 1: Walking history tour of downtown Palmer Our morning will start with a private walking tour of the historic downtown Palmer area. Guests will have the opportunity to visit colony-era infrastructure, learn about the Matanuska Colony Project and the families who still call the area home.
Stop 2: Colony House Museum in downtown Palmer After learning about the Colony Project, we’ll then stop for a private tour of the Colony House Museum. Managed by the Palmer Historical Society, this colony-era home is full of era appropriate artifacts, furniture, kitchenware and more. Tour the restored home for a sense of what life was like for colonists valley during the 1930s.
Stop 3: Farm stop, railroad walk or cultural visit We’ll end the day with a surprise! Pending availability, we will tour the local musk ox farm, take a walk along the historic railroad tracks that connect Palmer to Chickaloon for coal mining or connect with local Dene people for a glimpse into Ahtna and/or Dena’ina traditions and language.
