For centuries, the Hohenzollern were Prussia's - and later the German Empire's - ruling dynasty, even before Prussia turned from Duchy to Kingdom in 1701. The Hohenzollern left their mark everywhere in the city and traces of their power and influence can be found to this day. This tour takes you along Berlin's not only most striking, but also most beautiful, landmarks, all of which are in one way or another connected to the House of Hohenzollern: The Gendarmenmarkt with its fabled concert hall, the site of the City Palace - now in the process of reconstruction - the State Opera, Schinkel's Building Academy, the Humboldt University, the Zeughaus - now housing the much acclaimed German Historical Museum, and, of course, Museum Island. As am I'm sure you'll agree, without these historic sites and buildings Berlin wouldn't be what it is today.
The tour starts at Gendarmenmarkt with its fabled Schinkel-designed concert hall in the middle, flanked by the French and German Cathedrals. From there, the tour continues to Hausvogteiplatz, formerly the centre of Berlin's once vibrant Garment District. Today, a memorial commemorates the deportation and subsequent murder of the many Jews who worked in Berlin's clothing industry. Next are the townhouses: Built over the past 15 years, their sleek, often spectacular, design can safely be regarded as one of Berlin's architectural highlights. From there, the tour moves on to the newly opened Barenboim-Said Academy with its much praised Berlioz Concert Hall, which was designed by Frank Gehry. Passing the St. Hedwig's Cathedral, the Faculty of Law of Berlin's Humboldt University - formerly the Royal Library - the State Opera - which is currently undergoing a massive overhaul - and the Zeughaus - the tour finishes on Museum Island.
