Monmouth Historic Inn was built in 1818 by John Hankinson, a gentleman from Monmouth County, New Jersey. He only lived 8 years after building Monmouth and is buried on the property with his wife. John Anthony Quitman then purchased the home with his wife, Eliza in year 1826. The home stayed in the Quitman family for nearly 100 years. He became Governor of Mississippi, and a US Congressman. During the Mexican War, Quitman was a United States Marine Corps Brigadier General who led the troops during the victorious Battle of Monterey. Because of his gallantry and victory, Quitman was awarded a 14K gold sword, adorned with aquamarine gemstones and intricate gold details of the battle as a Congressional Medal of Honor by President Polk in 1847. The current owners of Monmouth, Nancy and Warren Reuther of New Orleans, Louisiana, keep the sword in a bank vault; however, there is a display of Quitman’s sword inside the home's study.
The property consists of 26 acres today and is a historic luxury destination bed and breakfast, which hosts guests from all over the world. Its fine dining and first-place award-winning restaurant, Restaurant 1818, is the only Antebellum home dining experience in Natchez. With tours offered each day of the home, the gardens are open year-round for guests to sit back and enjoy a Mississippi afternoon alongside one of the ponds stocked with Big Mouth Bass, enjoying a mint julep on Monmouth's courtyard, or overlooking decades old wisteria vines when in full bloom.
