Clonalis is the ancestral home of the O’Conors the last High Kings of Ireland and the traditional Kings of Connacht. The O’Conor family have lived in the area along the banks of the River Suck for over 1500 years, a time unrivalled in Ireland. Learn about this unique Gaelic families legacy and rich heritage and how their story is woven intrinsically into the history of Ireland.
Filled with an outstanding collection of antique furniture, period features and historic artifacts and over 100,000 manuscripts in our archives there is a rich heritage to share: the last known verdict of Brehon Law dating from the sixteenth century, the harp of Turlough O’Carolan – last of the great Irish bards, and the inauguration stone of the O’Connor kings are just some of the tour highlights. From the moment you enter the gates, you step into a time capsule from the fourth century to the present day of one of Ireland’s oldest families and we look forward to sharing its stories and secrets with you.
From the 21st June – 31st August (Monday to Saturday 11am to 3.45pm with last tour at 3pm) visitors can drop by and view the house and its astonishing trail of history guided by one of our knowledgeable guides from whom you will learn the astonishing history and heritage of one of Ireland’s oldest Gaelic families, descendants of the High Kings of Ireland. Pour over the wonderful collection of art and manuscripts in our museum, chapel, library and manuscript room and discover the family’s, and Ireland’s, storied history involving the O’Conor clan.
Due to covid restrictions all tours must be booked and paid for in advance.
Access to the house is not level and there is no lift inside. We try to accommodate in every way possible, so please contact us in advance of visiting.
Please note we do not allow prams or pushchairs in the house and only allow small bags in the house.
Children ages 15 or under must be accompanied by an adult; during a school visit the teacher is in loco parentis. Accompanying adults are responsible for supervising the children in their care at all times.
We regret that dogs and pets are not allowed in Clonalis house, grounds or gardens.
