Herculaneum is an incredible ancient Roman city, smaller than Pompeii, but much better preserved. It was a rich city of the Empire that faced the center of the Gulf of Naples; many of his houses are superb and elegant, showing that many of his citizens had achieved good economic prosperity.
The visit to the Mount Vesuvius lasts about 2 hours and consists of walking around the crater where you can admire a fantastic view of the Gulf of Naples. You walk enough, it is preferable to wear running shoes. I live on the slopes of Vesuvius and for me it's a fundamental element of the landscape, even knowing that it is the most dangerous volcano in the World.
The trail to the Vesuvius crater includes rocky and uneven terrain requiring solid footwear.
Begin your tour in the morning to enjoy cooler temperatures and smaller visitor groups at Herculaneum.
Bring at least 1 liter of water and sunscreen; the volcanic landscape offers little shade.
Check weather forecasts before hiking, as visibility and trail safety can be affected by rain or wind.
Herculaneum was buried during the same AD 79 eruption that destroyed Pompeii, preserving it under volcanic material that protected wooden structures and organic items more effectively.
The area follows strict preservation measures to protect both the archaeological ruins and volcanic environment, encouraging responsible tourism and limiting visitor impact.
Provides ankle support and traction on rocky volcanic paths.
Protects from strong sun exposure on exposed trails.
