Moderate fitness — able to cycle short distances and walk for an hour on uneven terrain
A one-day loop from Nairobi that pairs a 7 km bike ride and short gorge walk through Hells Gate’s Rift Valley cliffs with a boat trip on Lake Naivasha to see hippos and birdlife. Expect mixed terrain, geothermal vistas, and local cultural stops.
The group meets in Nairobi before dawn; city lights blur behind the minibus as the Great Rift Valley pulls into view. Two hours northwest, the air sharpens and the escarpment drops away to reveal Hells Gate — a raw, red-brown cleft in volcanic and sedimentary rock where cliffs crouch over a narrow floor. Riders unclamp helmets, crank pedals, and let the park set the pace: wind in spokes, the sun lifting above the gorge, and the distant call of larks.

High elevation and sun at the gorge make dehydration easy—bring a 1–2 L water bottle and top up at provided stops.
Trails are gravelly and walking sections include uneven rock; supportive footwear reduces the chance of slips or ankle twists.
The Rift Valley has little shade during the bike section—sunscreen, a wide-brim hat under your helmet, and sunglasses are recommended.
Hippos and birds are best viewed from the boat; hippos may appear docile but can be unpredictable—follow guide instructions on the water.
Hells Gate sits inside the Great Rift Valley where tectonic forces exposed sedimentary and volcanic strata; the area has seen long-term Maasai habitation and later colonial-era exploration.
Visitor impact is managed through designated trails and boat limits; stick to paths and avoid feeding wildlife to minimize disturbance.
Protects during the 7 km park ride and is required by guides.
Good traction for gravel trails and the gorge walk.
Essential for exposed sections of the ride and midday sun at the lake.
