We begin right before nightfall at the statue of Giordano Bruno in Campo dei Fiori where your guide will explain the Dominican Friar’s very unorthodox cosmological theories and esoteric beliefs which led to his eventual public execution by burning as well as a short explanation of his consideration as a freemason by Italy's masonic community. Next, we begin our walk to Via Monserrato to the women's prison where the tragically condemned Beatrice Cenci spent her last days waiting for her execution by decapitation. From here we continue on to the Spanish National Church, site of the burial of the infamous Borgia pope Alexander VI. The bizarre story of his burial and favourite mistress will capture your full attention as we make our way to Via dei Coronari where the courtesans of Renaissance Rome once lived. Next we visit the home and 'work place' of Giovanni Bugatti, Rome's most famous and last public executioner, also known as Mastro Titta. Overlooking the Tiber river at Sant Angelo bridge and with the stunningly lit facade of Castle Sant'Angelo your captivating guide will tell the story of Beatrice Cenci and describe the history of criminal justice in Papal Rome. After describing some of Castle Sant Angelo's more high profile prisoners, we move on to the square of Piazza Navona and stop near Palazzo Doria Pamphilj where the infamous Olimpia Maidalchini aka la Pimpaccia lived and worked until the death of her patron Pope Innocent X. Her later mysterious death and sightings of her black carriage rushing out of the city across Ponte Sisto still haunt Rome today. While in Piazza Navona, your guide will point out that one of the buildings seems to be inhabited by a disembodied hand of the lady Costanza De Cupis and here, you will learn her story. We conclude our walk at the Pantheon where stories of the ghost of assassinated King Umberto I recently appeared to the honour guard protecting his tomb. For those who would like, we finish up with a fantastic gelato next to the Pantheon.
