Description

The Moray Speyside is a very special region in The Highlands. Located east of Inverness in the Highlands around the River Spey, Moray Firth to the north, and the Cairngorms National Park to the south. With the driest and warmest weather in Scotland, the region is an ideal place to be visited all year around not only for the whisky distilleries based in Moray Speyside but for its wildlife, food, drinks, beaches, perfect dark skies for stargazing, outdoor activities, historic buildings, castles, walking, fishing and golfing.

Elgin Cathedral (Guided internal tour)

Elgin Cathedral, also known as the ‘Lantern of the North is a majestic, historic ruin situated in Elgin. Also, it is one of Scotland’s most beautiful medieval buildings, dating back to the 13th century. Elgin Cathedral has a rich history - it was badly fire-damaged in 1390 following an attack by Robert III's brother Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, who was also known as the ‘Wolf of Badenoch’. Well worth a visit and the climb of the tower is a must-do when in Elgin.

Johnston of Elgin (Mill Tour)

Since 1797, Johnstons of Elgin has produced the very best of cashmere, wool, and vicuna clothing. A local company with a global reach that puts Moray and its local community in a high spot. Book a tour of their mill and learn about its history, production, and what makes the company so special in its field for 225 years. Also, on-site, you will find their luxury shop selling clothing, a gift shop with local and Scottish products, and a fantastic restaurant with a varied menu with local products sourced.

A Speyside Whisky Distillery (Glen Moray or Benriach)

Speyside is the home of the largest number of distilleries in Scotland – with 51 distilleries working! Over 50% of the total amount of distilleries in Scotland are located in the Moray Speyside region so often called “Malt Whisky Country”. This perfect weather contributes to the growing of barley which when combined with the water of the River Spey, produces the “Water of Life” usually lighter and sweeter than other Scotch single malts.
