2.5–3 hours
Comfortably sit for several hours and step in/out of a raft on uneven or wet surfaces; no prior rafting experience needed.
When the Rogue River eases into evening, light pours down Hellgate Canyon and wildlife returns to the banks. This guided, three-hour float trades big rapids for intimate scenery, riverside snacks, and a front-row seat to the day’s best light.
The Rogue River softens in the evening. Wind settles into the canyon walls, swallows skim the current, and the water seems to breathe—steady, sure, unhurried. You load into a raft near Merlin as the day exhales its heat, the sun sliding behind ridgelines that turn bronze, then indigo. The river nudges you forward. Hellgate Canyon closes in like a stone hallway, framing a ribbon of sky that warms to the color of apricots.

It can feel warm at launch and cool once the sun drops—bring a breathable layer you can throw on mid-float.
Phones and glasses need straps or a dry pouch; light riffles can still bounce gear overboard.
Closed-toe water shoes or sandals with heel straps help on wet rocks during riverside breaks.
Plan to be at the Merlin shop 20 minutes ahead to fit PFDs, sign waivers, and catch the optimal launch window.
The Rogue was a lifeway for the Takelma people long before miners and early river runners shaped its modern identity. Hellgate Canyon’s hard volcanic and metamorphic rock funneled travel and trade—and now frames a classic float.
You’re in the Hellgate Recreation Area of the Rogue Wild & Scenic River system. Pack out waste, avoid trampling streamside vegetation, and keep a respectful distance from wildlife during low-light hours.
Evenings cool quickly in the canyon; a thin fleece or wind shirt keeps the chill off.
Provides traction at the launch, takeout, and during shoreline stops.
Protects electronics and snacks from splashes while keeping them accessible.
Mosquitoes can appear at dusk along calm eddies and shaded banks.
