Spend a full day cruising Queen Charlotte Sound to Furneaux Lodge: a scenic morning boat ride, a relaxed one-course lunch at a historic homestead, short shoreline walks, and a return cruise to Picton. Ideal for travelers seeking an easy, scenic introduction to the Marlborough Sounds.
The launch eases away from Picton and the hills of Marlborough fold back into long arms of water. Salt and green meet in the cleft of Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui, where ferry wakes scatter silver across the inlet and the shoreline seems to watch like a patient host. By the time the boat slips into the narrow throat of Endeavour Inlet, Furneaux Lodge appears: a low-roofed homestead on a wide lawn, its weatherboards warmed by the southern sun and a line of pines that lean toward the water.

The sound can be cool and breezy even on sunny days — pack a windproof shell plus sun protection for deck time.
Carry water, camera, and any personal items; lockers may be limited and you'll move between boat and shore.
Paths around the lodge are grassy and gravelly; wear sturdy shoes for short shoreline walks.
On-board commentary points out local history and landmarks that aren’t visible from shore — ask questions if you want local tips.
Endeavour Inlet and Queen Charlotte Sound served as travel and food-gathering areas for Māori and later as sheltered anchorages for sealers and settlers; Furneaux Lodge reflects the area’s coastal homestead heritage.
Visitors are asked to stay on paths, remove rubbish, and respect nesting birds; the Marlborough Sounds are managed for both recreation and ecological recovery.
Protects against spray and cool winds crossing the sound.
Essential for deck time when sunlight reflects off the water.
