A long day from Ljubljana delivers an otherworldly landscape of turquoise lakes, tufa dams and thunderous falls. This full-day trip to Plitvice National Park combines guided boardwalk routes, a Kozjak boat crossing, and the park’s UNESCO-listed geology.
A coach eases out of Ljubljana before dawn and the city’s slate roofs blur into forested highway. By mid-morning the road has given up urban noise for pine-scented air and the hush of karst country; the first glimpse of turquoise pools through trees is startling — an abrupt change from the drive’s muted tones. At Plitvice Lakes, the landscape moves. Water climbs and falls, tufa dams grow like living rock, and wooden boardwalks thread the market of cascades, inviting a careful, curious walk.

The route crosses into Croatia; have passport and any required documents ready at pickup.
Boardwalks and stone steps can be slippery — hiking shoes with good traction make the walk safer and more comfortable.
Weather in the karst is changeable; a lightweight waterproof and mid-layer will keep you comfortable.
Lower Lakes give the most dramatic waterfalls (including Veliki Slap) and are accessible in low season.
Plitvice was Croatia’s first national park (1949) and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for its outstanding travertine formations and hydrological processes.
The park’s travertine dams are living structures vulnerable to pollution and off-trail trampling — stay on boardwalks, pack out trash, and avoid touching mineral surfaces.
Essential for wet, uneven boardwalks and limestone steps.
Protects against sudden showers and spray from falls.
