More ways to explore the area's outdoor wonders
You leave Cairo before dawn and the city shrinks behind a curtain of palm groves and golden fields. By mid-morning the road gives way to a quieter panorama: shallow salt flats, reed-lined lakes and dunes that catch the sun like white sails. The tour threads through Qarun Lake’s shoreline, slips into the protected pools of Wadi El‑Rayan and finishes with fossil fields and shifting dunes at Wadi Hitan.

Start early to beat the heat
Departing in the morning reduces midday heat on dunes and makes waterfall swims more comfortable; expect a 2–2.5 hour drive from Cairo.
Protect fossils and follow the guide
Wadi Hitan is a protected UNESCO site—do not remove fossils or stray off designated paths to preserve the deposits.
Footwear for mixed terrain
Wear sturdy closed shoes for gravel fossil beds and dune ridges; sand will get into low shoes—gaiters or high socks help.
Hydration and cash
Carry at least 2 liters of water per person and small cash for local stalls or tips; bottled water is usually provided but bring extras for the dunes.
Sturdy closed hiking shoes
Protects feet on rocky fossil beds and grips sandy slopes.
Sun protection (hat, SPF 30+, sunglasses)
Sun is intense on open lakes and dunes—coverage prevents sunburn and heat fatigue.
