Comfortable walking 3–5 km over the day on uneven ground and stairs, with periods of standing in wind-exposed areas.
Ride the wild west of Kangaroo Island on a small-group 4WD tour through Flinders Chase National Park. From Remarkable Rocks to seal-lined cliffs, this day balances big scenery with close-up wildlife encounters and practical comfort.
The day begins with the 4WD rolling west, the road arrowing through blue gum and mallee scrub while the Southern Ocean sends a low growl from the island’s edge. Salt rides the wind. On Kangaroo Island, everything moves with purpose—the swells muscle into coves, the wind works the headlands, and the wildlife goes about its routine as if daring you to keep pace. By the time Flinders Chase National Park rises ahead, the mainland feels a world away.

Sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes with good grip handle the lichen-dusted granite and boardwalk stairs around Admirals Arch.
The southwest coast funnels strong gusts—secure hats, keep cameras strapped, and stay inside signed barriers near drop-offs.
Pack sun protection and a light windproof layer; conditions can swing from bright and hot to cool and blustery along the headlands.
Pickup is available in Kingscote and American River only; there’s no pickup in Penneshaw or at the ferry terminal.
Flinders Chase was set aside as a wildlife sanctuary in 1919. The Cape du Couedic Lighthouse was built from local stone between 1906 and 1909 to reduce shipwrecks along this hard coast.
Much of the park is regenerating after the 2019–20 bushfires—stay on marked paths and give recovering vegetation and seabird colonies plenty of space. Drones are prohibited around seal colonies.
The southwest coast is breezy year-round and occasional showers roll through quickly.
Grippy soles handle granite slabs, sandy tracks, and damp boardwalks.
UV is intense in South Australia, especially along reflective coastal rock.
