About This Adventure

Park your vehicle at Tarawera Trail Car Park and start your walk at the Tarawera Trail entrance which is situated in the car park. Tarawera Trail Car Park https://goo.gl/maps/q7WzLA8CTZb9Fa8T8

Duration

25 minutes on the Water Taxi + 10 minutes in Van Shuttle to Tarawera Trail Carpark.

IMPORTANT

BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL – if we have no bookings the Water Taxi does not operate.

The Trail starts from Tarawera Trail car park and you walk to the end of the Trail which is 100 meters from Hot Water Beach. The Trail is 15km approximately and takes 4-5 hours for reasonable walkers.

What to Bring

  • Good walking shoes (Tramping boots not required)
  • Drinking water
  • Lunch if you'd like to eat at one of our picnic benches!
  • Camera
  • Take your swimming costume and a towel in the summer for a swim in the cool lake or soak in warm lake edge.
  • Sunscreen is recommended

FURTHER INFORMATION

As you walk you will sense the awesome presence of the now ‘sleeping’ Mount Tarawera and enjoy the ever-changing glimpses of the Lake and its Bays along the way. You will pass historic sites and past settlements, cross spring-fed streams teeming with trout in the spawning season, and walk under Rata and Pohutakawa trees, shaded by groves of giant Mamaku ferns. Indulge yourself by passing some time at the lookouts and inlets as well as the many dips and valleys of the lands surrounding Lake Tarawera.

Travel is in an all-weather boat.
