About

This stunning 4km return ride leaves the Maydena station and ventures west. Early in the ride, we pass by the remnants of Hydro Tasmania’s bulk dry cement silos, workshops and stores that once provided concrete and supplies for the construction of the Gordon hydroelectric power station.

The journey continues through the beautiful fern-laden rainforest on to the Florentine rail station where there are historic forestry displays and exhibits. We encourage you to take a short peaceful stroll through the forest and down to the river, experiencing the temperate rainforest, giant tree ferns and tall eucalypts. During this time the Railtrack Riders are turned on the small purpose-built turntables for the return journey.

The remaining railway disappears into privately owned land over Pillinger’s creek into the old log loading yard that was sold by Australian Newsprint Mills when it ceased operations in the 1990s at Maydena. All that is left of that line is a small amount of line around 50 meters long heading into the log yard.

The Rail Cars

We have three styles of Rail Cars (2, 3 and 4 seaters) at each station to suit a range of bookings. On all Rail Cars, only the front 2 seats have pedals and brakes. The 3 seater can carry 2 adults and one child under 12 years. The 4 seater rear seats are only suitable for small children under 12 years.
