Suitable for most fitness levels—short walks and gentle inclines, accessible with basic mobility; expect some standing during the mine dig.
Drive through boreal forests to Lampivaara, Europe’s visitor-friendly amethyst mine, then hike the rounded fells of Pyhä-Luosto. This full-day trip blends geology, Sámi culture, gentle hikes and a hands-on gem-dig that makes Lapland’s deep time feel immediate.
The road into Pyhä-Luosto slips between silver-barked birch and black spruce, the trees leaning as if to watch you pass. On a clear morning a strip of sun cuts across the fells and the air smells of cold peat and resin. By midmorning you roll into the Luosto area, transfer to a low-slung snow car (in winter) and climb the rounded flank of Lampivaara—Europe’s only visitor-friendly amethyst mine—where a cosy hut perches like an old miner’s storybook.

Temperatures can swing quickly on the fells—carry a breathable insulating layer and a waterproof shell.
Amethyst pieces and local crafts are available at the hut—have payment ready so you don’t miss keepsakes.
Trails may be rocky or boggy; waterproof hiking boots with good tread are advisable.
Only collect amethyst in the designated mine area—the park prohibits picking minerals elsewhere.
Pyhä-Luosto combines a protected fell chain established in 1938 (Pyhätunturi) with the Luosto area; historically the fells have been part of Sámi grazing and seasonal routes.
The national park protects old-growth pockets and delicate bogs; stick to marked trails and respect seasonal closures to minimize trampling and disturbance.
Keeps feet dry on wet boardwalks and during short, rocky climbs.
Traps warmth on windy summits and during hut talks.
