Experience invigorating hikes to sacred waterfalls and natural pools, savor traditional meals made from local ingredients, and immerse yourself in the rich culture of the Mixtec community. This journey promises unforgettable memories and deep connections with nature.
Join us at 7:00 a.m. at Coyote Aventuras to kick off a day full. After a brief introduction, we'll board the Coyote van and head to one of the most mystical destinations in all of Oaxaca.
Santiago Apoala or Yutza Tó Ón, in Mixtec language, is located in the northern region of the Mixteca Alta, Oaxaca. Yutza Tó Ón means "where the river begins," and rightfully so, as this beautiful canyon has fresh springs of water emerging directly from the ground.
For this experience, we'll drive approximately 2 and a half hours through arid deserts and biospheres that protect ancestral cactus species. Along the way, you'll witness how the ecology begins to transform as we ascend into the Mixtec mountains, where the arid landscapes turn into pine and oak forests covered with Spanish moss. We’ll make a brief stop at the Apoala viewpoint, where you'll enjoy views of this small village of 800 inhabitants, nestled in a canyon surrounded by impressive limestone cliffs.
Once we arrive in Apoala, we'll have a picnic with traditional regional food and go over the day's activities. We hope you're ready for a day full of hiking and adventure! After the picnic, we’ll prepare to venture into the canyon, where a local community guide will share their cultural knowledge as we walk.
During our hike in Apoala, we’ll stop at some impressive waterfalls, learn about indigenous culture, and discover hidden pools that will invite you to dive in. According to the Codex Vindobonensis, the origin of Mixtec civilization is deeply intertwined with myths that include gods, heroes, and supernatural events. One of the most important figures in these narratives is Lord Eight Deer Jaguar Claw, a prominent Mixtec leader considered a semi-divine figure.
After swimming in the crystal-clear pools, we’ll head up to the grand Cascada de Cola de Caballo. This stunning waterfall, which descends over 100 feet, pours into a turquoise pool, perfect for a refreshing dip. For thousands of years, these thermal waters have been considered healing by local cultures, and we invite you to immerse yourself in them to connect with nature.
After our bath in the fresh waters of Apoala, we'll enjoy traditional regional food, prepared with the unique flavors of the Mixteca. Then, we’ll head to the Peñas Gemelas canyon, where you'll admire up close the impressive rock walls surrounding Apoala. These limestone walls are covered with bromeliads, agave, and Spanish moss, creating a unique ecosystem.
From Peñas Gemelas, we'll return to the Coyote van and celebrate a beautiful day combining hiking, indigenous culture, and breathtaking landscapes. We'll be back in Oaxaca around 8:00 p.m.
