This walk over 500 million year old early cambrian quartzite has some of the best views and most stunning scenery in the UK. You will learn of the early history of the rock, laid down as sand in a warm shallow sea, through the stresses and strains of mountain building and the opening-up of the Atlantic Ocean, to the scouring of the ice ages and on to modern day. With Chough and Peregrine circling our heads, we will be walking in the footsteps of the Celts, Romans and 19th Century Quarrymen, and looking out on a perilous stretch of coast and hearing tales of the sea.
The walk will run from the lower car park on South Stack Road, LL65 1YH. This is a pay car park owned by RSPB.
The walk is of moderate / challenging difficulty and usually lasts 3 hours. The walk involves steep ascents and descents on rough rocky terrain. The path is slippy in places when wet and there are many uneven stretches. It can also get muddy in places. Boots are a good idea, and we will need to dress for the weather as it is an exposed area on the cliff top.
