Saturday, November 8, 2025: BILL STEVENSON and JOEL PLASKETT “Two Men … Much Music 2.0”

Price: $43 + HST and fees Doors open at 6:30pm, cash bar available, show starts at 7pm

We are incredibly stoked to host a very special evening of music with two very special and iconic performers, Bill Stevenson and Joel Plaskett. “Two Men … Much Music 2.0” follows on the heels of Many Musics 1.0 a Winter Warmer Collaboration between Bill and Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas). Many Musics 2.0 is the first public performance with these two seemingly divergent musical minds and personalities. However, we anticipate that this may be the first of a number of musical meetings between these two inimitable individuals.

Bill Stevenson met Joel Plaskett years ago. Bill has been a staple on the Halifax music scene since the mid 1970’s. In fact Bill likely arrived in Halifax just about the time Plaskett was born. As a band leader and collaborator with many of Halifax’s iconic performers for decades it’s not surprising that Joel would eventually become familiar with Bill and his music. Over time they appear on the same stages, Stevenson would appear on Plaskett recordings and the two would begin to hang out play together in Joel’s studio forming a musical bond.

This show is a result of the mutual respect and collaboration of these two individuals .... come and join us for something special!

Bill Stevenson is no stranger to St Andrews having played here many times over the past 20 years including recording two award winning albums with Hot Toddy and Geoff Arsenault. Bill is a master. A consumate performer, an incredible piano player and an uncomparable interpreter of jazz, soul and rhythm and blues music. His career started in Ottawa in the 1960's where he became a regular local performer at Le Hibou, the notoriously infamous music club that spawned the likes of Bruce Cockburn and hosted contemporary music icons like John Lee Hooker, Joni Mitchell and Otis Span. Bill was soon recruited by legendary producer Paul Rothchild (The Doors, Janis Joplin, Paul Butterfield) to be part of the Boston based group Earth Opera who toured with The Doors in the late 1960's and included bandmates Peter Rowan, David Grisman and Billy Mundi. He found his way back to Canada and Halifax where he became a staple of the east coast music scene.

His music grounds him. And it's provided a path for others. Always the mentor and collaborator Bill has been seen in the company of well known artists such as percussionist extraordinaire Geoff Arsenault, roots and blues trio Hot Toddy, the iconic Dutch Mason, indie rocker and singer songwriter Joel Plaskett and most recently Afie Jurvanen.

Joel Plaskett - For over three decades, Joel Plaskett has proven himself a spinning wheel of reinvention. The Nova Scotia songwriter's eclectic body of work reveals a restless and playful spirit, always transforming and expanding.

While continuing to celebrate—and be celebrated for—his regional ties and embrace of East Coast musical traditions, Joel’s omnivorous appetite for new sonic horizons is an integral part of his work. His discography includes heavy riff epics, like Thrush Hermit's now-classic swansong Clayton Park (1999); low-fi and wide eyed solo records like In Need of Medical Attention (1999) and La De Da (2005); lean, loose and lyrical rock and roll with the Emergency on Down at the Khyber (2001) and Truthfully, Truthfully (2003); and a father-and-son nod to English folk traditions with Solidarity (2017). Then there are the endeavours that push the envelope further: like the Emergency’s Ashtray Rock (2007); the months-long songwriting challenge Scrappy Happiness (2012);. For his latest release, the 4-track project One Real Reveal (2024), Plaskett strips his songwriting down to its raw materials, allowing everything in—all the human touches the tape could pick up—and letting (almost) everything out.

Coast-to-coast and the world 'round, Joel has rocked crowds at clubs, festivals and grand old theatres with longtime Emergency bandmates Dave Marsh and Chris Pennell as well as drawn audiences close with intimate acoustic shows, both solo and with his father, Bill. He has rocked the rafters at Massey Hall and the National Arts Centre and warmed up huge stages for artists like The Tragically Hip and Paul McCartney.

While Joel’s songs are beloved far beyond the community that helped forge his sound, his creative heart is still found at home in Nova Scotia. At 45 Portland Street in Dartmouth there’s Fang Recording, the studio where he’s made many of his albums and produced records for other great artists Since 2023, Joel has used the space to present Window Inn Wednesdays, a monthly, no-phones-allowed variety show that pushes back—like most of his projects—against the speed and din of modern life, making space for real engagement between art, artist, and audience.

Bill and Joel have created just that with this show... Two Men, Much Musics 2.0

Saturday, November 22, 2025: A DYNAMIC DUO! Kim Dunn & Terra Spencer

Price: $32 + HST and fees Doors open at 6:30pm, cash bar available, show starts at 7pm

An off-the-cuff invitation in a Charlottetown hotel bar, a shared stage in a Canso rink, and a mutual love for questionable jokes...award-winning performers Kim Dunn and Terra Spencer paired up for a run of intimate shows off the beaten path in early 2025. Following the ravereception from that tour and the easy friendship that quickly grew, they are bringing the Backroads to the main stage.

Ask his fellow musicians and fortunate audiences, and both will tell you that Kim Dunn’s talent is as enviable as it is undeniable. As one of the East Coast’s most respected accompanists and arrangers, he has toured internationally for over thirty years with Rita MacNeil, Laura Smith, Heather Rankin, Bruce Guthro and many others. In the spotlight, he delivers his own well-crafted, heartfelt songs anchored by a soulful pitch-perfect tenor delivery, incomparable musicianship, and sly charm.

Terra Spencer has quickly secured a spot in the Maritime songwriting ranks, with four albums released since 2018. Making the unusual leap from life as a small-town funeral director to one of the busiest musicians on the folk circuit, she has kept company with the likes of Ben Caplan, Matt Andersen, and David Francey, who recruited her for his 2024 Juno-winning album ‘The Breath Between’. Butterscotch vocals, deft guitar, piano chops, and her quick wit led to Ron Sexsmith naming her “the real deal”.

Join Kim and Terra for a celebration of new friendships, kindred spirits, stirring songs, and irrepressible laughs.

“The seats were full and the audience was under the spell cast by Terra Spencer and Kim Dunn. It was a magical evening with two of Nova Scotia’s most loved talents! They brought us to tears, and laughter, had us clapping, stomping and singing along! If they ever come to your community, either as a duo or as solo performers, just go. Your heart will be full and your soul will thank you. ”

Saturday, December 13, 2025: A CHRISTMAS TREAT! Dave Gunning and JP Cormier

Price: $35 + tax and fees Doors open at 6:30pm, cash bar available, show starts at 7pm

Two of Canada’s greatest roots singer-songwriters have finally done what everybody’s wanted — heck, what they’ve wanted — for years. Dave Gunning and J.P. Cormier are releasing their first album together, called Two. Great friends, frequent collaborators, co-writers and touring partners, the pair has been talking about this album since pretty much the day they met. Now it’s here, and it’s everything fans hoped and dreamed it would be.

“We wanted to keep it simple and honest so we essentially made a 4-track recording, just two guitars and two vocals. Limiting ourselves this way actually helped inspire the arrangements and the performances. It forced us to dig a little deeper.”, says Gunning.

“A lot of artists like us feel compelled to put these massive productions together, and we said we’re not going to do that,” adds Cormier. “We’re going to make this record be that large with only two instruments and two voices. And we did that.”

Two is made up of everything the duo excels at. There are new collaborations between the two writers (Brothers, Home To Mary), new arrangements of antique folk numbers (Johnny Armstrong, Katie o’ the Gowrie), and some tasty, surprising covers (Never Picked Cotton, Stompin’ Tom’s Songbird Valley).

Every song had to meet their very high, combined standards. “We didn’t take it lightly,” confirms Gunning. “We really put our heart into it.”
